Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Martha Washington Inn is a 65-room hotel and restaurant facility owned annd operated by United Coal Company.

What now serves as the hotel lobby was built originally as the private residence of General Francis Patton and his wife in 1832. The United Methodist Church purchased the property in 1858 and it became the Martha Washington College until 1932. The Inn opened in 1937.

Since its acquisition by United Coal Company in 1984, the Inn has undergone extensive interior and exterior renovations. Phase One site development activities included improvements and additions to parking areas and vehicular circulation, a formal garden adjacent to the south wing, several interior courtyards, a fountain at the main entrance, and new exterior steps and walks. Phase Two included a swimming pool, tennis courts and additional landscaping.

Profesional responsibilities of the firm included master planning, engineering and landscape architectural design services and preparation of detailed construction documents. Architect and architectural historian for the project is Don A. Swofford.
