In 2004, McKee Carson and the UVA Real Estate Foundation kicked off a major expansion project that transformed the already regionally acclaimed Boar’s Head Inn Sports Club into one of the finest sports facilities on the East Coast. The site plan for the Boars Head Tennis Expansion called for two (2) expansive building footprints to accommodate nine (9) indoor tennis courts along with state-of-the-art fitness, aquatic and children’s program facilities. In addition, parking for 78 vehicles, a bus drop-off and a road circumnavigating the existing and proposed structures were added. As home to the University of Virginia Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams, NCAA sectional and regional championships represent just one of the many possible tournaments that could be held at this impressive new facility.
The design included creative integration of alternative stormwater strategies, sculptural landforms, and native plantings representative of the Piedmont’s successional landscape. Drain inlet and pipe infrastructure usage were reduced, use of retaining walls were reduced, and ¼ of the existing canopy was preserved. One visiting the site today would find it hard to imagine that a program so complex could nestle so comfortably in such a confined area.
